Mission

The mission of the African Chelonian Institute is to promote the long-term conservation of turtle, tortoise and terrapin populations across the African continent through research, education, and grassroots collaboration.

Why Protect Turtles and Tortoises in Africa?

Turtles and tortoises are the second most endangered group of vertebrates on the planet, just after the non-human primates. Africa is the continent where all turtles evolved 260 million years ago and now, sadly, the region where conservation efforts are most lacking. These species face numerous threats including: habitat lost, bushmeat consumption, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, and more.
