The mission of the African Chelonian Institute is to promote the long-term conservation of turtle, tortoise and terrapin populations across the African continent through research, education, and grassroots collaboration.
The African Chelonian Institute is the first center in Africa dedicated to the conservation of all turtle species of the African continent and associated islands. It will include: a breeding facility for endangered African tortoises and freshwater turtles; an educational center and exhibits for students and the public; and a training center for students and turtle researchers, and a reference library of specimens, fossils, and African turtle art. Additionally, we will expand grassroots programs with turtle researches in multiple countries to re-introduce turtles back into their natural habitats and conduct field surveys to better understand the distributions and conservation needs of wild turtle populations throughout Africa.
